During the dry season, black lava islands provide the only suitable nesting and breeding grounds for the Great White Pelican in the Rift Valley region. Due to the small size of the lake, fluctuations of water level affect the salinity of the lake and therefore the conditions alter, making it an unstable place for the Flamingos to rely on for food supplies.

However, the lake is a paradise for bird lovers as it has over 450 species, including migratory birds

 

Today Lake Elementaita is a peaceful and low-key place, lying in the shadow of an impressively peaked hill known locally known as the ‘sleeping Maasai’,. The lake attracts many visiting flamingo, and it shores are grazed by zebra, gazelle, eland and families of warthog. The lake and its surrounding forests are perfect for long walks and birding. Lake Elementaita is a very good pass over especially when heading towards Nakuru town in the Rift Valley.
